The first three volumes have title-pages without subtitle as originally printed for these three volumes, later reprinted with the subtitle, uniform with the later volumes. | This set lacks the supplementary volume ""Le Prisme"" issued free to the subscribers, of which no copies with colored illustrations were issued. | Text by Achard, Balzac, Janin, Karr, Nodier, Soulié and many others. | Illustrations (408 plates, 1000 illustrations in the text) by Gavarni, Grandville, Johannot, Meissonnier and others. | The first five volumes deal with general types. The other three [6-8] contain provincial and colonial types and have title: Les Français peints par eux-mêmes; encyclopédie morale du dix-neuvième siècle.
