Record of taxable property, including enslaved persons, owned by Rouzee estates

Smithsonian Institution,

This handwritten, single page document is an accounting of taxes owed to the Sheriff of Essex County by the estates of John and Richard Rouzee for the year 1830, recorded in two separate entries on the page. The first entry for John Rouzee lists the taxable property as "30 slaves, 10 horses, 1 coachee," twenty seven county and poor levies, and four hundred and ninety seven and one quarter (497 1/4) acres of land. The entry for the estate of Richard Rouzee lists the taxable property as six hundred thirty nine (639) acres of land. Both entries record payment received by Edward Rouzee on October 13, 1830 and are signed by A. Mievny. Writing on the reverse notes the type of account, date and amount paid. Both sides are written in black ink. There are also some calculations written on the reverse in graphite.
