Record of taxes on property, including enslaved persons, owned by Rouzee estates

DESCRIZIONE

This document starts with an account of taxes owed by the estate of "Inv Rouzee" to the sheriff of Essex County, Virginia for 1829. The taxes are itemized as four hundred seven and one quarter acres of land, "30 slaves 9 horses + 1 Coachee," and 27 county + poor levies for a total of forty-five dollars and thiry one cents ($45.31). It is noted that payment was received from E. Rouzee on October 29th. The document continues with taxes owed for the estate of Richard Rouzee to the sheriff of Essex County. This list contains only one entry, with two dollars and seventy four cents ($2.74) being owed for 439 acres of land. It is noted that payment was received by E. Rouzee on October 22nd. There are additional calculations in graphite in the bottom left corner. Writing on the reverse notes the amounts paid and the date. Both sides are handwritten in black ink. The paper is torn evenly along the top and right sides and has been folded multiple times.
